About the Artist
John Smith Gumbula is a multi-award-winning artist of WakkaWakka and GurangGurang heritage, and an adopted son of the Yolngu people of Elcho Island. With Celtic Irish and Scottish ancestry, John has spent over 30 years sharing his creative vision across the globe. As a cultural ambassador and visionary leader, his art builds cultural bridges, connecting communities to Australia’s Indigenous history, which stretches back over 60,000 years.
His work reflects a deep spiritual connection to Country, inspired by family and traditional custodians. Through his art, John preserves and celebrates culture, paying respect to Elders past, present, and emerging.
